TURKEY BERRY
It is a bushy, erect and spiny perennial plant used horticulturally as a rootstock for egg plants. Grated plants are very vigorous and tolerate diseases affecting the root system, thus allowing the crop to continue for a second year. It belongs to the family of Solanaceae.
It is scientifically known as Solanum Torvum. Other names are, Devil Fig, Pea Aubergine, Wild Egg Plant, Gully Beans and many other names.
In Ghana, the Akans call it Kwaho Nsusua/ Abeduru/ Anano Ntroba/ Yaa Asantewaa and Kantose by the Gas.
It originated from Central and South America but currently found in India, Indonesia, Ghana, Jamaica, Brazil, Mexico, Florida, China, South America, Caribbean, Alabama and other places in the world.
They are green when young to yellowish - green when mature. It has a spice flavor and are slightly bitter in taste. The seed has smooth glabrous, globose berry 1-1.5cm in diameter and borne on 1-2cm, pedicel thickened upward.
In Ghana it is used to regulate blood issues like pressure, low blood cell etc. Aside added to food, others boil it and drink the water, or blend it raw sieve it add milk and drink it, or boil it leaf for local medicinal tea etc.
Health Benefits:
Traditionally, we use the Turkey berries in household meals giving it somewhat bitter taste. Apart from that, research shows that, turkey berries have some amazing healing benefits and that, are highly medicinal, from it roots to it leafy.
